The World, Residences at Sea wins ‘Best Ship Wine List in the World 2020’ from The World of Fine Wine Magazine

December 2020

London, England – December 2020: The World, Residences at Sea has been awarded two prestigious accolades in The World of Fine Wine magazine’s World’s Best Wine Lists 2020 for the sixth year in a row. The world’s largest, privately owned residential ship received three stars, the highest possible, and lead its category as Best Ship Wine List in the World 2020.

A highly prestigious award, The World joins the ranks of some of the finest restaurants on the globe including Terroir in New York, New York, Pix Pâtisserie in Portland, Oregon, and Robuchon au Dôme at the Grand Lisboa Hotel in Macau. This recognition by one of the world’s leading wine magazines is a testament to The World’s impressive and unique wine collection. French and American selections have a strong presence, followed by emphasis on the wines of Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and others. In each of these countries The World’s Beverage Team looks for exceptional producers and smaller newcomers that have sparked interest for wines that are nuanced, elegant and reflect the characteristics of their terroir.

Commenting on the accolade, Beverage Manager Marinela Ivanova said, “It is once again an honor for The World to be recognized at the highest level for the sixth year running and alongside the best establishments in the world. Our sommeliers feel privileged to work for a group of connoisseurs like our Residents who have a deep appreciation for and understanding of wine. They are well-travelled, quite knowledgeable and have sophisticated palates which challenges us to continually seek unique offerings.” She emphasized Residents’ support in achieving this recognition. “Our Residents are the reason we continue to top this list. They give us total freedom in filling the ship’s wine cellar with a diverse selection that we know they will enjoy. We understand our Residents’ individual preferences and therefore can customize our portfolio to continue to surprise and delight them and appeal to everyone’s tastes.”

The ship’s worldwide itinerary affords The World’s Beverage Team a unique perspective and opportunities that are unmatched by their land-based counterparts. Sommeliers collect wines from various wine regions visited during the ship’s voyage to more than 100 ports of call annually. Throughout the year they host special excursions to vineyards, some that are not open to the general public, and that produce rare wines seldom available through traditional wine merchants. Residents see firsthand where the wines were made, get to meet the winemakers, and hear their inspiring stories behind that year’s harvest.

In early 2020, Ms. Ivanova escorted 12 Residents on a six-day trip through two wine regions in South and Western Australia. Among the winemakers who received the group for tastings were Stephen Henschke, owner of Hill of Grace Vineyard which contains a parcel called the Grandfathers Block with vines planted in 1860, Dean Hewitson of the oldest Mourvedre vineyard on earth with vines planted in 1853, and Chris Ringland, whose tiny production of sought-after wines are sold to chosen customers with only several hundred bottles of four labels made annually. With no cellar door, Mr. Ringland welcomed The World’s Residents into his home at the winery, a truly memorable day.

In addition to creating bespoke wine experiences, the ship’s sommeliers also work closely with The World’s chefs in creating menus and wine pairings that reflect the diverse cultures and foods from the destinations visited on the ship’s global journey. The World has a capacity of 16,000 bottles and more than 1,100 hand-picked selections from 20 countries, including an extensive sake selection of 44 labels.

The World of Fine Wine magazine’s esteemed panel of senior judges included some of the world’s greatest experts such as Alder Yarrow, Elin McCoy, Ch’ng Poh Tiong, contributing editor Andrew Jefford, Andreas Larsson and food editor Francis Percival.
