The World, Residences at Sea Announces Dr. Brian Kobilka as its Next Nobel Laureate Speaker

London, England –27 March 2019: The World, Residences at Sea (aboardtheworld.com), the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth, has announced that Dr. Brian K. Kobilka is the latest speaker to join its esteemed Nobel Laureate Lecture Series. The 2012 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry (shared with Robert Lefkowitz) will spend a week on board presenting lectures on “G Protein Coupled Receptors: The Body’s Communication Network” and “Challenges in Drug Discovery” when The World sails from Barcelona, Spain in late June 2019. Dr. Kobilka will also host an intimate breakfast forum for Residents and be honored at a cocktail reception and formal dinner in the Ship’s haute cuisine restaurant, Portraits.
Residents and Guests of The World will hear Dr. Kobilka, who is part of the faculty of Medicine and Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University, discuss his research on G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). GPCRs are the largest family of receptors in the human genome, and are responsible for the body’s responses to most hormones and neurotransmitters including adrenaline, serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. Because of their role in regulating a broad range of physiologic processes, GPCRs are the largest class of targets for new therapeutics aimed at an array of diseases.
About The World’s Nobel Laureate Lecture Series
The World’s Nobel Laureate Lecture Series was launched in September 2017 to bring esteemed Nobel Prize Laureates to the Ship annually to lecture on topics in their respective fields such as medicine, economics and science. Among previous program speakers are Dr. Shuji Nakamura who received the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the blue LED (light-emitting diode) and Dr. Edvard Moser, a 2014 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine who lectured on the brain’s maps of space.
The speaker series offers Residents the opportunity to personally connect with and learn from internationally-renowned Nobel Prize Laureates. About Dr. Brian Kobilka
Dr. Brian Kobilka received Bachelor of Science degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1977. After graduating from Yale University School of Medicine in 1981, he became a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Robert Lefkowitz at Duke University. While there, he identified the gene that encodes the receptor for the hormone adrenaline, later finding it was part of an entire family of receptors that look and act in similar ways. Known as GPCRs, they are responsible for the body’s response to most of its hormones and neurotransmitters and are the largest targets for new therapeutics aimed at an array of diseases. In 1990 he joined the faculty of Medicine and Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University.
