The World Ends 2018 and Begins 2019 in Stunning South Africa
October 2018
The World, the largest privately-owned residential Ship (aboardtheworld.com) on the planet returns to Cape Town, South Africa in December 2018 to cap off an adventure-filled year. The Ship’s extended visit to the multicultural city follows a journey that began 2018 in Miami, Florida before setting off to explore ports of call in South America, Europe, the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, and the British Isles and Hebrides. The Ship’s arrival in Cape Town follows a two-and-a-half week Mid-Atlantic Exploration sailing from Senegal to the jewels of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – Ascension and St. Helena islands – and during which The World will cross the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn. After several days in Namibia around Christmastime, the Ship returns to Cape Town to celebrate the New Year. A favorite destination amongst its Residents, The World has visited South Africa, on six previous occasions.
The iconic city of Cape Town provides the perfect base for Residents and guests to explore the stunning nearby Cape Winelands, a chance to spot the native “big five” while on safari and taking in the incredible natural landscapes. They will also embark on extensive overland adventures both in South Africa and other neighboring countries, travelling through the heart of the nation to Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Residents will have the opportunity to partake in one-of-a-kind experiences designed to ‘bring the destination alive’ including a golf outing to Pearl Valley Golf Estates and two Overland Journeys to the lush Okavango Delta. The World will host a lecture by Christo Brand, a warder who formed a close friendship with Nelson Mandela during his time in prison. Christo will share many fascinating insights into his relationship with Mandela and some of the experiences they shared together.
In early January, The World will sail from Durban and embark on an expedition of Madagascar, one of the most biodiverse islands on the planet, as well as the Aldabra Group of the Seychelles. These tropical islands are like nowhere else on earth with a large collection of endemic flora and fauna, as well as native lemurs and chameleons. Around 80 percent of Madagascar’s wildlife is a result of the island’s strange geological history. From the arid desert coasts to lush forests and mangrove-lined rivers, Residents will spend time discovering this exceptional and varied coastline. Wildlife encounters continue on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aldabra, the Seychelle’s most southerly island, with giant tortoises and incredible coral reefs.
The Ship’s 2019 journey will be filled with a multitude of one-of-a-kind, customized experiences. Residents will sail approximately 41,500 nautical miles and call on 10 maiden ports of call, all from the comfort of their own homes on this unique and elegant Ship.
