Shopping Portland’s Freshest Provisions for our Journey to New York
This past October, the threat of Hurricane Joaquin unfortunately coincided with The World’s Journey throughout New England. Taking necessary precautions to avoid the eventually lackluster storm, the Ship decided to skip a few planned ports in Rhode Island and Connecticut, and instead headed straight from Portland, Maine to New York City.
In preparation for some sea days before our next port, we inquired of the locals about the best fresh fish market in Portland, Maine. Hands down, the recommendations were for the Harbor Fish Market, located near the still active piers.
We weren’t disappointed! We opted for lobster meat, rather than live, whole lobsters (easier and more flexible for onboard preparation), fresh scallops, fresh flounder, smoked salmon, homemade clam chowder, and additional items.
While we didn’t purchase any, it was rare to find fresh uni in an American fish market. However, the next week we did have fresh uni sushi (from Japan) at an excellent sushi restaurant in New York City.
Overall, a terrific selection of really fresh fish and seafood, and friendly and helpful service. Wouldn’t it be nice to find a comparable market in every port?
