The World, Residences at Sea, Returns to Australia in 2020

August 2019

LONDON, England, August 2019 – The World, the largest, privately owned residental yacht on earth (aboardtheworld.com) returns to Australia for a two-month circumnavigation of the country in February and March 2020. This marks the seventh time The World has called on The Land Down Under since the ship launched in 2002 and will include extended visits to more than 15 ports of call in all seven of the nation’s states plus stops at dive sites and several Captain’s Choice days. Commencing its journey in Darwin, the ship will call on a combination of remote destinations, larger cosmopolitan cities, and end with an eight-day expedition across the precious wilderness of the Kimberley region.

Experiencing Australia Through Integrated Programming

Despite being a relatively young nation, Australia boasts a wealth of cultural and historical treasures, which, combined with some of the most spectacular landscapes on the planet, make it an unforgettable destination. The World plans to harness the diversity and richness of this compelling country through integrated programming for Residents and Guests (R&G) that includes destination experiences, enrichment lectures, food and beverages, overland journeys, special events, and more.

  • Destination Experiences: A sampling of the unique and immersive experiences planned include visits to an Adelaide jeweler to learn about the coveted Pink Argyle Diamond and the township of Hahndorf, the country’s oldest surviving German settlement; a private backstage tour of the Sydney Opera House and discovering the Bay of Pearls by land, sea and air; and excursions to view indigenous wildlife.
  • Enrichment: To quench Residents’ thirst for knowledge and inquisitive nature, lecturers will be brought on to speak about a variety of topics including a marine biologist who is currently researching shark movement patterns and an expert on the Great Barrier Reef. An art expert will speak on contemporary Australian and Aboriginal art as well as a painting workshop for R&G.
  • Food and Beverages: The World will take advantage of Australia’s world-renowned food and wine with opportunities for dining at some of its finest establishments complemented by themed dining events on board. Led by award-winning Beverage Manager Marinela Ivanova, R&Gs will explore a variety of South and West Australia wineries such as Torbreck, Yalumba Henschke, Cullen, and Leeuwin and a private visit to the home of famed winemaker Chris Ringland. In Burnie, a custom chefs’ experience will include meeting a local saffron producer, beekeeper, truffle producer and winemaker and taking a whiskey master class with the head distiller at Hellyers Road Distillery.
  • Overland Journeys: Four customized multi-day/night programs have been created for R&G to spend extended time ashore including Canberra and the Australian War Memorial, discovery of UNESCO-designated Uluru and Kata Tjuta, an inland exploration of Tasmania and an immersive journey to some of Australia’s acclaimed wineries.

Circumnavigating Australia

After commencing its journey in Darwin, The World will continue eastwards to Thursday Island, one of the 274 tropical islands that lie between the northernmost tip of Queensland and Papua New Guinea in the Torres Strait. From here, the ship will sail the Great Barrier Reef, stopping in remote ports for land-based exploration before continuing on to the Reef’s Port Douglas, Cairns and Hamilton Island. R&Gs will have the opportunity to dive and snorkel in these world-renowned waters before visiting vibrant Brisbane.

The World will sail down the east coast of Australia on its way to dynamic Sydney, where R&G will immerse themselves in everything this dazzling city has to offer, from its iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge to fine dining, cultural events and golden beaches. Upon departing Sydney, the ship will journey on to the top end of Tasmania, with stops in Bell Bay, on the River Tamar, and Burnie, before doubling back to visit sophisticated Melbourne. After a few days exploring this culturally rich city, The World will voyage through the Bass Strait en route to Adelaide and then around Australia’s southern coastline to Fremantle providing access to Perth. Sailing on to Exmouth, gateway to the eco adventure and coral reefs of Ningaloo Marine Park (this should not be bold, it’s not an itinerary stop), R&Gs will be just in time for the beginning of the Reef’s migratory whale shark season; snorkelling with these majestic creatures is an unforgettable experience.

The Kimberley Expedition

A highlight of The World’s 2020 itinerary is its eight-day expedition to The Kimberley on Australia’s remote coast. Following its stop in Broome, R&G will view its terracotta landscapes and turquoise waters by land, air and sea. Highlights include hiking to view ancient Aboriginal art from over 40,000 years ago, Zodiac cruises to explore the canyons of the Mitchell and King George waterfalls, and scenic flights by plane and helicopter for aerial views of the surrounding landscapes, including the Bungle Bungle region; a series of eroded sandstone ridges said to have been formed 360 million years ago and discovered only recently (in the 1980s).

New Year celebrations in Hong Kong, a January exploration of the Philippines and a two-week West Papua Expedition precede the ship’s Australian voyage. An ambitious sailing itinerary is planned for the remainder of 2020 with the ship destined for the Indian Ocean, Europe, Canada, United States and South America. It ends an event-filled year with an epic expedition of Antarctica.
