The World, Residences at Sea, to visit Japan September and October 2019
August 2019
LONDON, England, August 2019 – The World, the largest, privately owned residental yacht on earth (aboardtheworld.com) will visit Japan for a 21-day exploration of the island nation in September and October 2019. Commencing the journey on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, this 2019 visit marks the fifth time The World has called on the land of the rising sun, with previous visits in 2006, 2009, 2014 and 2017.
Experiencing Japan Through Integrated Programming
Seamlessly modern with strong threads of cultural tradition running through its veins, Japan is an enthralling destination. The World plans to capture the full essence of this multi-faceted country through integrated programming that includes enrichment speakers and events, destination experiences, overland journeys, food and beverages, and more. Themes focus on traditional crafts and culture, regional culinary specialties, and the glorious gardens of autumn.
- Enrichment: Among the topics being presented during onboard lectures by noted speakers are art and culture, architecture of Tokyo, cultural workshops and political science.
- Overland Journeys: Multi-day/night programs include an introduction to Kyoto with city highlights for first-time visitors and another for those who have enjoyed Kyoto before with programming that extends to local artisans and craftsmen.
- Destination Experiences: Unique experiences for Residents will focus on sake, wine and whiskey, Noto Peninsula, a lecturer-hosted outing on the architecture of Tokyo, a guided visit to Hiroshima and meeting with a survivor and visits to gardens and bamboo forests.
- Food and Beverages: Experiencing Japan’s culture through food and beverages is key. Opportunities for shoreside dining at renowned restaurants complement themed dining and events on board. Guest Chef Jonas Nåvik proves that Norway and Japan have more in common than one might think. A passion for the freshest seafood guarantees that this one-star Michelin chef brings a decidedly modernist approach to local ingredients. Tsushima Kitahara, a 13th generation sake producer of the famous Shichiken Brewery, will host a tasting of Shichiken sakes and educate Residents on the history and intricacies of sake production.
Journey Across Japan
The ship’s first port of call in Japan to Otaru (Sapporo) kicks off with a “Spirits of Hokkaido” program and visits to a sake brewery, a winery and one of the country’s oldest whisky distilleries. The World then sails to Kanazawa where Residents will have the opportunity to visit remote landscapes where ancient agricultural and cultural traditions are still practiced. A call to Sakaiminato, with its intriguing Samurai district and the country’s oldest Shinto shrine, is followed by a two-day visit to Busan, South Korea. Here, exploration of Gyeongju’s UNESCO-listed World Heritage site will form the basis of a full day program, followed by a three-day immersion in the dramatic history and landscapes of Hiroshima. During this discovery of Japan, the ship will also call at Kobe, within reach of temple-studded Kyoto and dynamic Osaka, before continuing to the vibrant capital of Tokyo. A final stop at peaceful Kōchi, an historic and rural region, will complete The World’s Japanese odyssey before it sails on to China.
The World’s journey to Japan coincides with the Rugby World Cup, offering Residents the chance to show support to the global teams.
A 24-day Northwest Passage (NWP) Expedition this summer precedes the ship’s call to Japan. The World will sail this legendary Arctic sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and complete a historic ‘double transit’ passage. In 2012, the ship made history by becoming the 181st and largest vessel to complete a full, unsupported transit of the NWP. In 2019, The World plans to make history again as the largest vessel to traverse the passage in both directions, sailing westbound from the Atlantic.
There are over 90 ports of call in the ship’s 2019 journey, which has so far taken in the Indian Ocean, India and Western and Northern Europe, including an extensive dry-dock in Cadiz, Spain in spring 2019 for refurbishments. The World’s Residents make reinvesting in their ship a priority to keep it in top condition mechanically, as well as to maintain an interior design that is fresh and modern and that supports its best-in-class operations.
