May 2017
The World, Residences at Sea is awarded three stars and wins “Best Ship 2017” in The World of Fine Wine’s ‘World’s Best Wine Lists 2017’
The World, Residences at Sea has been awarded two prestigious accolades by The World of Fine Wine magazine. For the third year in a row the world’s largest, privately owned residential ship appears on the World’s Best Wine Lists 2017 receiving three stars, the highest possible, and leading its category as Best Ship 2017.
A hugely prestigious award, The World joins the ranks of some of the finest restaurants on the globe including Palais Coburg Residenz, Austria which received Best Overall Wine List, and other three-star winners such as Rouge Tomate, New York and Formento’s, Chicago. This recognition by one of the world’s leading wine magazines is a testament to The World’s impressive wine collection. From Burgundy, Piedmont, Bordeaux, Tuscany and California, The World’s wine list boasts a wide range of mature vintages, served by a dedicated and knowledgeable Beverage Team.
As a three-star winner, The World’s celebrated wine list is described as “pretty, defined, and knowledgeable”, while the ship’s extensive by-the-glass program and selection of half bottles was particularly noted, as was its outstanding organization and presentation. The judges proclaimed Beverage Manager Marinela Ivanova the “vinous opus of the ship’s celebrated wine list”, praising her “leadership and obvious passion for her trade” and successful collaboration with the ship’s Residents to curate a “wine collection that is truly global in scope.”
Commenting on the recognition, Ms. Ivanova said, “To be included alongside such esteemed contemporaries for the third-year running is a real honor. While continuously sailing the seven seas and calling on many countries where wine is made we forge exceptional relationships with winemaker partners. We enjoy exploring the local wine scene by visiting traditionally renowned and up and coming quality-oriented producers. This is what makes our global wine list truly unique. On board we have more than 1,100 labels hand-picked from 19 countries, a wine cellar with a collection of 16,000 bottles, an extensive sake selection of 32 labels, a contemporary cocktail program and a top tier spirits selection of over 300 labels.”
The judges assessed over 4,500 wine lists with only 997 announced as winners, and even fewer awarded three stars. The esteemed panel of senior judges included some of the world’s greatest experts including Alder Yarrow, Elin McCoy, Ch’ng Poh Tiong, contributing editor Andrew Jefford, Andreas Larsson and food editor Francis Percival.
