The World Announces 2018 and 2019 Expeditions

April 2018

Each year, The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth, wows its Residents with once-in-a-lifetime adventures on its continuous global journey. Among the many advantages of home ownership on The World are its expeditions, typically lasting between two and three weeks. Led by a team of experts who provide hands-on experience and knowledge, these special voyages, often to the planet’s most remote regions, are enhanced by subject matter experts (SME), a multitude of experiential activities and Zodiac landings. Depending on the locale, the SMEs may include anthropologists, marine biologists, dive masters, historians, kayak guides, naturalists, oceanographers, ornithologists, and regional specialists. Many will lecture on board and some will lead Residents on informative shoreside treks for in-depth discovery to fully immerse them in the destination. In designing these unique journeys, The World is pleased to partner with EYOS Expeditions, a global leader in curating bespoke expedition experiences.

Expeditions are a true highlight for the 142 families from 20 countries who together travel to the far corners of the globe – all from the comfort of home on this elegant, private yacht. The World’s 2018 and 2019 expeditions will captivate and inspire its Residents, experiencing firsthand some of Earth’s most incredible natural wonders. From the vast frozen wilderness of the Polar Regions to the rich and unique ecosystems of tropical Madagascar, these custom voyages transport Residents to fascinating places.

Svalbard Archipelago Expedition 2018

Sailing from Tromso, Norway at the beginning of August, The World will undertake an 11-day expedition through the Svalbard Archipelago, a supreme destination for viewing arctic wildlife and home to the majestic polar bear. Situated 600 nautical miles from the North Pole, Svalbard provides Residents with wonderful occasions for encounters with both animals and polar landscapes. Every opportunity will be seized to explore the coast: from whale and walrus watching to seeking out arctic wildlife by Zodiac.

British Isles / Hebrides Exploration 2018

In early autumn, The World sails to the British Isles to experience the more remote regions – which many residing in Great Britain have not explored – from a different angle. Known for its remarkable combination of prehistoric architecture and wildlife, the Ship will travel to the isolated archipelago of St. Kilda and on to additional islands throughout the Hebrides such as the Glannan Isles, Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands to sample Scotland’s finest single malt whiskeys. Residents will also enjoy some of the most spectacular walks and hikes through the rugged Scottish Highlands and inner and outer Hebrides.

Mid-Atlantic Exploration 2018

In December, The World traverses the Mid-Atlantic from the Canary Islands to South Africa via the remote Overseas British Territories of volcanic Ascension and St. Helena. These tiny but diverse sub-tropical islands and surrounding waters are home to endemic birds, fish and plants found nowhere else on the planet. The well-preserved ecosystem attracts a variety of marine life, as the ocean teems with dolphins and whales.

Madagascar Expedition 2019

In January 2019, The World will return to the Indian Ocean, visiting Madagascar, one of the most biodiverse islands on the planet, and the Aldabra Group of the Seychelles. These tropical islands are like nowhere else on earth with a large collection of endemic flora and fauna, as well as native lemurs and chameleons. Around 80 percent of Madagascar’s wildlife is a result of the island’s strange geological history. From the arid desert coasts to lush forests and mangrove-lined rivers, Residents will spend time discovering this exceptional and varied coastline. Wildlife encounters continue on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aldabra, the Seychelle’s most southerly island, with giant tortoises and incredible coral reefs.

Northwest Passage Expedition 2019

In late summer, The World embarks on a classic maritime adventure on an iconic route that spans 3,500 miles of the High Arctic, traversing across the northern coastline of Canada and Alaska. Having been the largest passenger Ship to sail the Northwest Passage (NWP) from west to east during its record-breaking 2012 NWP Expedition, The World returns to this incredible region in 2019 to accomplish a ‘double transit’ sailing from east to west.  Extra time will be dedicated during the journey to discovering the majestic landscape of Baffin Island, stopping at the historical sites of Beachy Island and Dundas Harbour, as well as taking in the sprawling ice stone scenery of Ellesmere. Residents will be able to spot the whales, polar bears, muskox, and other creatures that call this powerful habitat home, as well as visiting several Inuit communities.

Previous Expeditions and Records

The World’s expeditions have taken Residents to some of the most remote places on earth where they have learned about the region’s culture, wildlife, natural history, ecosystem and more. In 2017 during its Ross Sea Expedition, the Ship broke a world-record for the most southerly navigation recorded by any vessel (reaching 78°43•997´S and 163°41•421´W at the Bay of Whales). Among the regions visited during expeditions are Antarctica, Bering Sea, Borneo, Greenland, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Polynesia, Sea of Cortez, Vanuatu and the White Sea.
