The World Lives A ‘Green’ Way of Life at Sea

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on Earth recognizes the importance of being environmentally conscious and operating with an eye to reducing its carbon footprint. The ship remains in compliance with all environmental regulations in the approximately 100 ports of call the ship visits every year around the world.

The World was the first Ship of its size designed to burn only clean marine diesel rather than heavy bunker fuel making for a much more environmentally friendly vessel. The ship still only burns low sulfur (less than 0.1% sulfur) marine gas oil (MGO), well below the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) mandated limit of 0.5% sulfur content allowed in most areas around the world.

The World was the first Ship to feature the innovative Scanship wastewater cleaning system. Further improvements to the advanced wastewater purification system came when a Wartsila Membrane BioReactor treatment system was added in an effort to continuously improve and exceed international requirements.

Its environmentally conscious features that were incorporated into the original design and supplemented over time include:

  • The World maintains a ‘Clean Class’ notation from the classification society DNV.
  • The World maintains a ‘Zero Discharge to Sea’ policy – no solid garbage or food waste of any kind is released to sea, even when permitted by international regulations. Treated wastewater is discharged but only in line with legislation governing the Ship’s speed and distance from land. Items such as crushed glass, scrap metal and ash from incinerators and hazardous waste are disposed of on land as required by law.
  • The World’s Crew annually carries out beach clean-ups in expedition locations where Zodiac landings are used, and conditions allow.
  • The World has actively pursued the reduction in single use plastics on board. Three potable water bottle filling stations have been installed for the use of Residents, Guests and Crew thus reducing the use of plastic water bottles. Biodegradable products have replaced single use items such as food containers, cutlery, cups, etc.
  • The World continually looks to increase the use of local purchases, including organic products where available.

The World continues to research new technologies to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and its carbon footprint in living a green way of life at sea.

Energy-saving initiatives that have been implemented include:

  • Implementing LED (light-emitting diode) technology throughout the Ship and replacing existing high wattage halogen and incandescent lamps with the latest and more efficient LED lighting technology to reduce energy consumption.
  • Upgrading the existing HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) which included the ‘energy save mode’ allowing the main HVAC computer system to automatically control the HVAC system. For instance, saving energy in Residences when not occupied.
  • Capturing waste heat from engine exhaust gases and engine cooling water systems that are utilized to assist to supplement steam and electric heating, reducing boiler use and overall fuel consumption.
  • Replacing all Crew shower heads and sink aerators with reduced flow models thus reducing water consumption and saving 1,000 metric tons of fresh water annually.
  • Replacing original provision refrigerator compressors with more efficient machines.
  • Replacing electrical stoves in the galleys with more energy-efficient induction ovens and exhaust hoods.
  • Installing new galley dishwashers with models that consume less water.

Moving forward, The World is constantly on the lookout for new innovations & Ideas that can contribute to our sustainability objectives and is investing substantial amounts into new technologies to improve decarbonization efforts in accordance with the IMO’s goals towards zero emission in 2050.

Some of these upcoming projects include:

  • The addition of a new bulbous bow to reduce drag and therefore increase fuel efficiency by enhancing the ship’s hydrodynamics.
  • The introduction of a SHOREPOWER system allowing the ship to utilize shoreside electrical power and shut down its main engines when in port. This allows The World to emit zero emissions in ports that supply renewable energy on their electric grid.
  • Improving propeller design to increase propulsion and fuel efficiency
  • New silicone under-water antifouling paint applied to the hull of the ship to prevent fouling and thus increase fuel efficiency by reducing drag and prevent the spread of invasive species.
  • Upgrading the HVAC system further to a more energy efficient system utilizing new technology becoming available.

A dedicated Environmental Engineer is responsible for the prevention of environmental incidents and overall adherence to the Ship’s Environmental Management System including training of all crew members. In addition, a Health, Safety and Environmental Officer is always present onboard to increase the focus on working standards, safety, and environmental regulations.
