The World Emerges from Dry-dock in Exquisite Form
July 2016
World’s largest, private residential ship sails into Europe following refurbishments
Renowned for her striking beauty and unique features, The World, the largest, privately owned residential ship on the planet, combines the ultimate travel lifestyle and one-of-a-kind experiences with a private yacht and luxury vacation home. She is admired as one of the most distinctive superyachts at sea. This summer The World is sailing across Europe in exquisite form – conveying the feeling of an intimate private yacht, following a refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain that transformed several areas of the Ship during a 28-day dry-dock.
A lifestyle aboard The World allows the Residents who own the 165 luxury homes to explore the planet’s most remote and exotic locales as well as more well-known destinations from the comfort of their own private Residence – from studios to an expansive five-bedroom penthouse. Circumnavigating the globe every two to three years, The World offers a sanctuary for the 142 families who call the magnificent vessel home. Only steps away from your Residence are six restaurants, exceptional golf facilities, swimming pools, a full-service spa, fitness center, beauty salon, library, cinema, tennis court, and more.
Ambitious in scope with a multi-million dollar investment by her Resident owners, the refurbishments have elevated The World’s already supreme standards of quality and design to a level not seen before in a private mega yacht. During the dry-dock a number refurbishments to public areas were undertaken by 800 crew and contractors.
Marina Restaurant Brings the Outside In
Among the largest of the dry-dock projects was a complete redesign of the Marina restaurant with the addition of stunning retractable floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a new private dining room, bar/lounge area, Chef’s presentation table and curated contemporary art works. A specially commissioned wine vault exquisitely showcases 1,500 bottles of the Ship’s award-winning wine collection. The restaurant’s moniker comes from its back wall which when lowered reveals a floating platform for launching watercraft like kayaks or Zodiacs, romantic moonlit dinners or taking polar plunges when cruising Arctic and Antarctic waters. The Marina restaurant is now among the most stylish at sea with a contemporary take on nautical elements and panoramic views. Custom furnishings make use of natural fabrics with a serene color palette of soft blues, deep grays and glistening metallic. Marina is now a showcase for the preparation of regional delights from the land and sea. Its innovative design and décor highlights its creative cuisine – a contemporary American steakhouse and seafood bar presented with an international flair.
Sourced by a Resident art expert, unique handcrafted pieces of art by Italian artist Riccardo Gusmaroli and Venezuelan artist Manuel Merida sit harmoniously within the restaurant. Gusmaroli’s works are inspired by travel. Minimalist at first sight, a closer look of his ‘Mondo Blanco’ reveals vortexes similar to sea currents that are crafted from tiny paper boats. The piece gives a sense of movement and elements of wind, currents and water. Merida’s kinetic ‘Cercle Rouge Vemillon B2’ perpetually rotates. It is fascinating to watch and represents The World’s continuous circumnavigation of the globe.
A Venue That “Brings the Destination Alive”
Life aboard The World offers the ultimate combination of luxury travel with custom destination experiences and enriching cultural events like renowned guest speakers, local dancers and musical performances that ‘bring the destinations alive.’ At the redesigned Colosseo theater, Residents can enjoy guest lecturers who speak on a wide range of topics such as art and culture, history, local politics, environment, and health and well-being – all designed to quench Residents’ thirst for information related to the destinations visited. The space is also a venue for plays, destination-inspired films, first run movies and meetings. Seating 186 in new comfortable, ergonomically designed seats, the plush thick pile-carpets, solid wood parquet flooring and velvet drapes display a refined elegance. Upgraded sound and lighting combine to enhance the total experience.
Star-gazing at its Finest
Residents looking for a unique place to watch the ever-changing scenery can escape up to Deck 12 aft and relax on one of four coveted Bali beds. Redesigned and elevated for breathtaking views, each alcove features retractable awnings, privacy walls, and more. To enhance the experience even further, Residents can call In-Residence Dining from a beside telephone to order an afternoon snack and refreshing drink to sip while watching dolphins play in the Ship’s wake or to request a romantic dinner with a favorite wine or champagne. Then relax in luxury in your freshly made bed – complete with fine linens (or bring your own pillow), for sleeping under the stars. It’s a truly transformative star-gazing experience.
The World Spa & Wellness Center
The World has one of the most comprehensive spa and fitness programs at sea, with her team of experts crafting the perfect combination of wellness, fitness, and beauty. New pedicure and manicure stations and a new barber shop are complemented by a complete menu of services including body, massage and facial treatments and advanced skincare.
Physical wellness is paramount. Sculpt and stretch in the new Pilates studio or embrace an array of expert-led fitness classes on the outdoor exercise deck, to include TRX and yoga.
