The World, Residences at Sea Announces 2024 Journey
An awe-inspiring voyage to six continents and expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia & Falkland Islands;
The Kimberley, Australia; and Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands
August 2023 – The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth (aboardtheworld.com) has revealed its 2024 Journey. Sailing across five oceans and visiting six continents, a once in a lifetime voyage awaits the ships’ residents and guests, with more than 90 ports of call. The only ship of its kind in operation today, The World offers a one-of-a-kind ultra-luxury lifestyle of global exploration from the comfort of ‘home’. Internationally renowned for its explorations to the planet’s most remote and undiscovered regions, 2024 will begin in the snowy surrounds of Antarctica and end in Mexico’s tropical west coast.
Carefully curated by the residents themselves after months of discussion and research, this itinerary combines vast open expanses, lesser explored remote lands, and tiny island inlets with some of the globe’s most vibrant, metropolitan locations like Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, and Tokyo. Continuously circumnavigating the globe on a journey bursting with unparalleled adventure, those on board will be immersed in a wealth of varied destinations, from the snow-covered landscapes of Antarctica, to the thriving cosmopolitan cultures of Asia, as well as uncover the wonders of Australia’s Kimberley region with its rugged rock forms and breathtaking wilderness.
A new experience beckons at each port, with a dozen exciting maiden calls, and a visit to one of the most remote locations on earth, the Tristan da Cunha archipelago. Other highlights will include swimming through the emerald waters of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay and marveling at the towering limestone pillars, discovering the thriving art scene which has inspired so many in Uruguay’s windswept Punta del Este, to sighting the colorful multitude of indigenous wildlife found only on Melanesia’s idyllic Solomon Islands’ archipelago.
Antarctica, South Georgia & Falkland Islands Expedition; South America and South & East Africa
Residents will ring in 2024 from their home at sea with an expedition to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands with its breathtaking scenery, enthralling wildlife, following in the footsteps of legendary polar explorers. Out in these pristine wilds, where a mere scattering of research stations marks the only human presence, residents will experience the last continent to be discovered by humans. Here, nature reigns with humpback whales, seals, orcas, and seabirds. Residents will explore the furthest reaches on Zodiac, hike penguin-packed beaches, and kayak around towering icebergs. A world class expedition team of presenters and guides will open the door to this magnificent, other-worldly realm.
Then it’s off to the dynamic South American metropolises of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to sail Sub-Saharan Africa’s exterior. Cape Town, with the opportunity to witness the Big 5 in the wild bushveld at Phinda Game Reserve is followed by sailing the turquoise seas of Africa’s East Coast to experience the amazing cultures of Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya, a week in the Seychelles, and four months traversing Asia, with stops in Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, China and more.
Indian Ocean, South & East Asia
As the month of May emerges, The World sets course for some of Asia’s most significant cities, exploring the world-renowned cuisines and dazzling skylines of Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as the popcultural capital of Seoul – where royal palaces sit beside blazing shades of neon. Residents will then sojourn on to Kyoto, whisking through unique Japanese landscapes. Towards the east, the contrasting islands of Ishigaki and Taiwan await, where picturesque natural beauty reigns in the former and a tight lattice of streets, vast food markets and energetic nightlife abound in the latter. A southerly descent towards the Philippines and Indonesia follows allowing for further explorations into jungles, both urban and natural in form. Voyagers will discover the oasis of Bali, ‘the island of a thousand temples’ – a land which both inspires and restores those who visit.
Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands & New Zealand
The long-awaited Kimberley Expedition in Australia’s northwestern region commences in mid-August. As the country’s last frontier, the Kimberley comprises vast, remote lands and spectacular scenery. After landing in Broome, residents will follow the path of the Aborigines, taking in boab-studded plains, magnificent waterfalls, ocher-hued mountains, and jaw-dropping gorges for an immersion in the outback like no other.
A rare expedition to the remote wilderness of the virtually untouched Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands beckons in September, where volcanic landscapes, huge lagoons, and emerald forests lie within. An extended voyage across Oceania includes visits to some of Australia’s best-loved cities of Cairns, Brisbane and Sydney—with numerous opportunities to dive and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Cruising along New Zealand’s towering fjords and sparkling waterways, The World will forge a path from the South to the North Island, docking at areas of magnificent geological structure like The Bay of Islands, to the cosmopolitan, laid-back cities of Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland.
South Pacific and Hawaiian Islands & Mexico
Residents will embark on an incredible journey through the azure waters of the South Pacific, docking at the paradisical Isles of Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga, before arriving to the tropical shores of Hawaii. The journey concludes on the palm fringed beaches of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, allowing for sunsoaked holiday celebrations and New Year’s Eve festivities in Cabo San Lucas where residents will raise a glass and say ‘salud’ to another extraordinary year of exploring Earth’s bounties.
