The massive Santa María cathedral, a Gothic landmark begun in the 13th century, overlooks the Bay of Palma and, on the left, the adjacent Moorish-style Arab fortress was converted into a royal residence (Royal Palace of La Almudaina).

The 13th-century Catedral de Mallorca (La Seu) (Cathedral of Santa Maria of Mallorca) is prized for its Gothic style and intricate architectural details, including more than 60 colorful stained-glass windows and a central rose window that floods the interior with colored light. The tombs of Kings James II and James III of Mallorca are in the Royal Chapel.

The altar of Catedral de Mallorca (La Seu) (Cathedral of Santa Maria of Mallorca), was redesigned in the early 1900s under a commission by Antoni Gaudí, Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The large southern side-chapel was redesigned in the Modernist style in 2007 under commission by a Japanese architect who chose to present an underwater theme for the chapel, Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
