Returning to The World: From Seattle to Civitavecchia
I wouldn’t let myself believe this trip was actually happening until we got all the way here.
Four airports, an actual port, and various assorted taxis and ferries later we were on the Ship, cruising through the Mediterranean on our way to Portofino. It felt good to be back for the first time since February of 2020.
We were jet-lagged so we took it easy, unpacked, and relaxed. I did go walk around the local oceanside port town of Civitavecchia for a few hours. It was mostly free of tourists and had the typical ancient / modern mix of forts, churches, and town squares. Parts of the port are built on top of old Roman walls and frescoes, and there is a working fishing fleet.
The next day we went out into the countryside with four other couples and visited a local farm and winery to do a cooking lesson and eat fresh pasta and try the local olive oil and wine. The countryside was pretty, the food was great, and it was good to catch up with people we hadn’t seen in almost two years.
We were back on the Ship in the late afternoon and had a great sushi dinner out on the deck while watching the sunset as we headed towards Portofino.
