Uncorking Exclusive Access to World-Renowned Bordeaux Wineries

Wine loving Residents & Guests (R&G) of The World recently enjoyed three incredible days in Bordeaux, France filled with exclusive tastings and private, invitation-only lunches and dinners to legendary wineries. Producers of renowned, award-winning wineries whose doors are typically closed to the general public, opened them especially for R&G of the world’s largest private residential ship, hosting tours and tastings few on earth are privileged to enjoy. Considered among the top wine regions on earth, and thanks to longstanding relationships between the Bordeaux vintners and The World’s Beverage Team who worked for months organizing the private events, R&G enjoyed exclusive access to infamous wineries like Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Château Pavie, and Château Mouton Rothschild among many others.

“Every time the Ship calls on the port of Bordeaux, we organize bespoke events for our Residents,” said The World’s Beverage Manager Marinela Ivanova, DipWSET. “The premium Bordeaux producers do not open their doors for visitors unless they are valuable clients or people of the trade with whom they have close connections.”

“It was a wonderful early summer’s evening at the Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, and we felt truly special as the owner, Florence Cathiard, opened the property exclusively for us,” said The World’s Food & Beverage Director, Armand Louw. “We were welcomed with such hospitality. The evening began with a private cellar tour followed by a tasting of exquisite wines and canapés hosted by Madam Cathiard herself.”

Armand continued, “She arrived on her bicycle at the Château since her house was not far from the winery. She had so much energy and charisma and entertained us with stories of her adventures and the history of the Château .”

A private dinner was held at Château Smith Haut Lafitte which opened its doors for members of The World’s Order Illustre des Chevaliers de Meduse, a Resident-led club honoring one of France’ oldest gastronomic orders. The World’s Meduse program pairs the world’s best wines with the finest food, cultivating an unbreakable friendship among members.

At Château Pavie, Mr. Henrique de Costa, son in law of the winery’s owner, hosted a private event for 60 Residents along with their family and friends.

One of the grandest events in Bordeaux was held at Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by one of the most renowned families in Europe known for their involvement in wine and philanthropy. The day included a cellar tour and private visit of their Museum of Wine in Art followed by a formal reception and dinner at Château Clerc Milon.

The private event was hosted personally by several members of the Rothschild family. Grateful for the occasion to gather the whole family in honor of The World’s Residents were Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild and his father Jean-Pierre de Beaumarchais.

Other wineries enjoyed by R&G included Château Haut-Bailly, Château Lynch-Bages, and Domaine de Chavalier.
