The World, Residences at Sea Announces Promotion of Lionel Catherin to Executive Chef
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida [April 9, 2026] – The world’s largest, privately owned residential mega yacht announces new culinary leadership.
The World, Residences at Sea, is proud to announce the promotion of Lionel Catherin to Executive Chef, effective July 2026. A respected leader and culinary innovator, Lionel’s appointment underscores The World’s continued commitment to recognizing and elevating exceptional talent from within its ranks.
Lionel succeeds Senior Executive Chef Geoffrey Murray, who will retire on May 9, 2026, following an extraordinary career. Murray announced earlier this year that he will be pursuing his longstanding passion for art.
A cornerstone of The World’s culinary team for more than two decades, Lionel joined the ship in August 2004 as Chef de Partie. His remarkable talent, discipline, and leadership quickly set him apart, earning him a series of promotions: Sous Chef (2008), Chef de Cuisine (2009), and Executive Sous Chef (2014). Between 2018 and 2024, he also served as Relief Executive Chef, further demonstrating his readiness to step into this pivotal leadership role.
Born in Brittany, France, and raised in the coastal village of Moëlan-sur-Mer, Lionel developed an early appreciation for fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients as part of a fishing family. He began his formal culinary training at just 16 years old in a prestigious Relais & Châteaux restaurant and went on to refine his craft in French Polynesia and throughout France under renowned chefs, including Charles Barrier and Jacques Maximin.
Over his 20+ year tenure aboard The World, Lionel has traveled the globe, collaborating with Michelin-starred chefs and mastering a diverse range of culinary disciplines—from traditional comfort cuisine to cutting-edge molecular gastronomy. Known for his passion for mentorship, cultural appreciation, and culinary excellence, Lionel has earned the admiration of colleagues and the Resident Community alike.
In his new role, Lionel will partner with Executive Chef Sebastian Gnida to lead The World’s globally inspired culinary program. He will oversee all galley operations, including provisioning, inventory management, public health compliance, and quality control across the ship’s six restaurants. Additionally, Lionel will lead In-Residence Dining and manage a team of more than 50 culinary professionals, ensuring consistently exceptional dining experiences for Residents & Guests.
“Lionel’s promotion is a testament to his dedication, creativity, and leadership over 20 years with The World,” said Jessica Hoppe, President and CEO. “We are incredibly proud to recognize his exceptional talent and are confident that under his guidance, our culinary program will continue to thrive and elevate the dining experience for our Residents & Guests.”
“It is an incredible honor to step into the role of Executive Chef aboard The World, a place that has been my professional home for over two decades,” said Catherin. “I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and proud to work alongside such a talented culinary team. I look forward to continuing to innovate, celebrate global flavors, and create unforgettable dining experiences for our Residents & Guests.”
Lionel’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for The World’s culinary program as it continues to set the standard for excellence at sea.
