Outdoor Art from Around the World

Outdoor Art from Around the World

Cameras come out when Residents approach bold street murals and dramatic sculptures. In communities throughout the world, outdoor art is often more than just an eye-catching display; it’s a window into the local culture and an homage to the changemakers who have shaped history.

Christchurch, New Zealand

After devastating earthquakes in 2011, Christchurch, New Zealand, and the surrounding areas have been thoughtfully rebuilt with an eye for beauty and sustainability. Murals adorn redbrick walls, including a now-iconic image of a native silvereye bird and a kōwhai tree titled, “Rise From the Rubble.” Christchurch artist Brandon Warrell has artwork all around the city, and this particular piece was selected by public vote.

Catalina Island, California

Just off the coast of Southern California, Santa Catalina Island is a jewel that has welcomed movie stars, dignitaries, and presidents. Its seaside capital, Avalon, is practically car-free and is a charming oasis of shopping, dining, and puttering around on golf carts. A colorful wall showcasing a local celebration is one of many murals and sculptures scattered around Avalon. Some of these artistic surprises date back to the 1920s, when chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. was developing the island and adorned the outdoors with colorful Catalina tiles.

Philipsburg, Sint Maarten

In the community of Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, pops of color appear everywhere. A trail of more than 20 curated murals has been created by contemporary artists as part of ColorMeSXM – a project from Be The Change Foundation designed to add color to the island through art. On the exterior of this building, artist Bisera Tsvetkova depicts her first impressions of the island after moving from Bulgaria.

Residents have the freedom and flexibility to explore at their own pace, taking in the local culture from every perspective – be it artistic expression, historical narratives, or simply admiring the beauty of each destination.
