Discovering the Many Dimensions of Japan’s Living Traditions
This September, The World begins one of its most thoughtfully designed Cultural Immersions yet with an extraordinary exploration of Japan that reaches far beyond its celebrated landmarks.
Across five weeks, Residents will do far more than simply visit the country; they will engage with its traditions through the people who preserve them, the artisans who continue centuries-old practices, and the cultural experts who reveal the stories often hidden beneath the surface.
For many travelers, Japan is a collection of iconic moments: a temple at sunrise, a perfect bowl of ramen, the energy of Tokyo after dark. While unforgettable, these experiences only begin to hint at the remarkable breadth and depth of the country. This autumn, Residents aboard The World will experience something entirely different.

From September through early October, The World‘s Cultural Immersion Program transforms an extraordinary itinerary into a Journey through Japan’s living traditions. This carefully curated program connects every destination through a thoughtfully layered collection of shoreside experiences, expert lectures, onboard workshops, culinary explorations, and cultural performances that reveal the country’s remarkable diversity.
Rather than simply moving from port to port, the voyage unfolds as an ongoing conversation with Japan itself, as each destination reveals another chapter.
In Hakodate, Residents may master the art of omakase alongside Chef Sakae Kahata or explore the ancient legacy of Jōmon culture through firsthand mask crafting. Akita offers Residents moments of quiet reflection during traditional practices like meditating with a Sōtō monk or learning the discipline of traditional Japanese archery inside Kyoshoji Temple.

Further south, Niigata introduces Residents to the region’s celebrated sake traditions, artisan workshops, and home-style cooking classes led by local grandmothers, while Kanazawa, long regarded as one of Japan’s great centers of craftsmanship opens doors to private kimono designers, lacquerware masters, renowned breweries, and centuries-old tea houses.
Each experience has been selected not simply because it is well known, but also because it offers genuine access to the people who continue these traditions today. Throughout the voyage, four distinctive Cultural Immersion themes create a common thread.

Epicurean Experiences celebrate Japan’s extraordinary culinary heritage through local market visits, sake tastings, seasonal ingredients, and intimate encounters with chefs and producers.
Artisan Discoveries introduce Residents to master craftspeople preserving centuries of knowledge in ceramics, woodworking, textiles, lacquerware, bamboo artistry, and countless regional specialties.
Wellness and Mindfulness Experiences explore Japan’s enduring relationship with balance, from meditation and temple rituals to restorative onsen traditions and private wellness retreats.
Martial Arts Immersions illuminate the philosophy behind disciplines such as aikido, judo, and kyūdō, emphasizing mindfulness and personal growth as much as physical practice.

Together, these themes create a portrait of Japan that extends well beyond its landmarks.
That same philosophy continues on board. Long before Residents step ashore, the Journey begins through lectures, workshops, and conversations with an exceptional group of cultural experts.
Returning guest lecturer Dr. Jonathan Clements, one of the world’s foremost authorities on East Asian history, explores pivotal moments that shaped modern Japan. Garden historian Yuri Ugaya examines the design philosophy behind Japan’s celebrated landscapes, while sake authority Nicholas Coldicott brings a new perspective to one of the country’s most treasured cultural traditions. Later in the voyage, Professor Laura Evans explores Japan’s contemporary art world, and author Adam Tanner explores post-World War II history and the country’s evolving place on the global stage.

More than simply lectures, these are invitations for Residents to see Japan through an entirely new lens before ever stepping ashore.
During their time aboard, Residents will also be accompanied by Cultural Ambassadors, expert port advisors, and nationally licensed guides who will provide continuity from one destination to the next. Their local knowledge, personal relationships, and cultural insight will help transform individual excursions into a deeper understanding of the country.
The immersion extends naturally into life on board, as Japanese culture becomes part of everyday life through calligraphy, origami, bookbinding, and traditional craft workshops, alongside demonstrations of tea ceremonies, yukata traditions, and Japanese games. At The World Spa & Wellness Center, treatments inspired by Japanese wellness philosophies like Shiatsu, Reiki, and Yumeiho offer another opportunity to embrace centuries-old practices of restoration and balance.

The culinary program also reflects the Journey. The World’s former Senior Executive Chef Geoffrey Murray rejoins the Ship to lead a series of curated food and beverage experiences that connect regional ingredients, local producers, and Japanese culinary traditions with life on board, creating a seamless dialogue between destination and dining.
Evenings bring another dimension of cultural discovery. Residents will experience performances ranging from traditional dance ensembles and taiko drumming to internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Makoto Ozone, celebrated Rakugo storyteller Katsura Sunshine, classical ballet, and contemporary Japanese music. Tokyo’s vibrant creative spirit also comes alive through “Beauty Blenda,” an energetic performance celebrating Japan’s dynamic LGBTQ+ artistic community, offering a contemporary counterpoint to the country’s longstanding cultural traditions.

For those wishing to venture even further, Design Your Own Journey experiences created in partnership with Bear Luxe Japan offer bespoke itineraries extending beyond the Ship. Whether discovering hidden onsen retreats, spending the night on Japan’s celebrated art islands, exploring tea country, or enjoying exclusive cultural access rarely available to independent travelers, each journey is individually tailored to Residents’ interests.
Over five weeks, every port, every lecture, every workshop, and every shared meal contribute to a richer understanding of a country where ancient traditions and contemporary creativity exist in remarkable harmony.
When The World arrives in Tokyo this October — the final call following nine remarkable ports across the country — Residents will celebrate the culmination of an immersive Journey through Japan, thoughtfully curated one unforgettable moment at a time.
