The World Lives A ‘Green’ Way of Life as One of the Most Environmentally Conscious Vessels at Sea
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – Recognizing the importance of being environmentally conscious and operating with an eye to reducing its carbon footprint, The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth, is a Ship of many ‘green’ firsts.
- The World was the first Ship of its size designed to burn only clean marine diesel rather than heavy bunker fuel making for a much more environmentally friendly vessel. The Ship now only burns low Sulphur (less than 0.1% Sulphur) gas oil, below the IMO mandated limit of 0.5% Sulphur content.
- The World was the first Ship to feature the Scanship wastewater cleaning system. In 2016 a Wartsila MBR treatment system was added in an effort to continuously improve and continue to exceed current and future international requirements.
Equally impressive beyond the ‘firsts’ are environmentally conscious features that were incorporated into the original design and supplemented over time.
- The World maintains a ‘Clean Class’ notation from the classification society DNV.
- The World maintains a ‘Zero Discharge to Sea’ policy – no solid garbage or food waste of any kind is released to sea, even when permitted by international pollution regulations. Treated wastewater is discharged but only in line with legislation governing the Ship’s speed and distance from land. Items such as crushed glass, scrap metal and ash from incinerators and hazardous waste are disposed of on land as required by law.
- The World’s Crew carry out beach clean-ups in expedition locations where Zodiac landings are used and conditions allow.
- The World has actively pursued the reduction in single use plastics on board. Three potable water bottle filling stations have been installed for the use of Residents, Guests and Crew thus reducing the use of plastic water bottles. Biodegradable products have replaced single use items such as food containers, cutlery, cups, etc.
- The World continually looks to increase the use of local purchases, including organic products where available.
The World continues to research new technologies to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and its carbon footprint in order to remain one of the ‘greenest’ vessels sailing the high seas. Energy-saving initiatives that have been implemented include:
- Maximizing different engine configurations by using main engines as shaft generators;
- Replacing original provision refrigerator compressors with more efficient machines;
- Installing new dishwashers with models that consume less water;
- Implementing LED (light-emitting diode) technology throughout the Ship and replacing existing high wattage halogen and incandescent lamps with the latest and more efficient LED lighting technology to reduce energy consumption;
- Implementing the HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) ‘energy save mode’ allowing the main HVAC computer system to automatically control the HVAC system in Residences when not occupied;
- Converting the treatment of water in the Marina Pool to a Silver Ionization method from the traditional chlorination process, which reduces chemical usage as well as is gentler to the skin and eyes of swimmers;
- Replacing all Crew shower heads and sink aerators with reduced flow models thus reducing water consumption and saving 1,000 mt fresh water annually;
- Capturing waste heat from engine exhaust gases and engine cooling water systems that are utilized to assist to supplement steam and electric heating, reducing boiler use and overall fuel consumption; and
- Replacing electrical stoves in the galleys with more energy-efficient induction ovens and exhaust hoods.
A dedicated Environmental Engineer is responsible for the prevention of environmental incidents and overall adherence to the Ship’s Environmental Management System including training of all crew members. In addition, a Health, Safety and Environmental Officer has been added to increase the focus on the working standards as well as the growing environmental regulations.
