Acapulco: 6 May 2009 to 7 May 2009
Made famous as the vacation spot for Hollywood’s elite and European jet-setters in the 1940’s, Acapulco continues to attract worldwide visitors with its sunny climate, Pacific Coast beaches and delightful location, nestled in the crook of the imposing Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Already a favourite with infamous pirates such as Sirs Francis Drake, Henry Morgan and Thomas Cavendish, Acapulco is most famous for its cliff divers (clavadistas) who take their risky jumps by the El Mirador Hotel in La Quebrada (literally “gorge”).
History awaits in the petroglyph-blanketed mountainside of Palma Sola and at the Historical Museum at El Fuerte de San Diego, Acapulco’s massive fortress. Take a dock-side stroll along the tree-lined Malecón promenade or visit the true hub of Old Acapulco, the shaded Zócalo. This town plaza enchants with vendors and shoe-shine men, music on Sunday evening and the interesting exterior of Our Lady of Solitude Church.
