The World

Guayaquil: 22 Mar 2009

Guayaquil is Ecuador’s largest city as well as its main port. This vibrant economic centre is also the primary gateway to the Galápagos Islands. Stroll the city’s waterfront promenade Malecón 2000, a wonderful renovation of the old, gritty Simón Bolívar boardwalk. Considered a model of urban renewal, the wonderfully executed project incorporates museums and shopping malls, open space and restaurants, theatres and gardens. Don’t miss the modern Museo Antropológico y de Arte Contemporáneo (known simply as MAAC), a combination of archaeological exhibits and contemporary Ecuadorian art. Test your stamina with a climb up the 465 steps to the top of Santa Ana Hill, site of the city’s first settlement—the sweeping views are your reward.
