Tampico: 11 Feb 2009 to 12 Feb 2009
Perhaps best known through the Stan Kenton Band’s 1950’s song “Tampico…on the Gulf of Mexico,” Tampico combines the charm of its quaint historic centre with the leisure of a nearby unspoiled Gulf Coast beach. The town has come full circle, quietly reclaiming the reputation as a pleasant vacation spot it held as far back as the early 1900’s. Once again, visitors stroll around downtown Tampico’s immaculately manicured squares, surrounded by New Orleans style buildings with delicate ironworks.
The towers of the neoclassic Cathedral rise like sentinels above the city, while the Plaza de Armas shows off the majestic City Hall, surrounded by verdant palm trees. And if a stroll along the beach, which slopes so gently into the sea that you can wade a long way out and only be waist deep in clear water, doesn’t relax you enough, perhaps a round of golf at nearby Club Maeva Miramar’s 18-hole course will do the trick.
