Nessebar: 23 Jul 2008 to 25 Jul 2008
There are two distinct sides to this 3000-year old former fishing village on the Black Sea: the peaceful, pedestrian-only old town and the vibrant resorts in the newer section along the coast. Stroll the narrow walkways of the old town, deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Among the remnants of the Thracian era are the acropolis, a temple to Apollo and sections of the walled fort. Many of the churches from the Byzantine, Ottoman and Medieval periods remain, including a seaside Basilica dating back to the 6th century. Examples of the traditional Black Sea-style wooden buildings and windmills from the 19th century have been lovingly restored.
The scene changes dramatically just up the coast, where sun worshippers from across Europe flock each summer to recharge and relax. Accommodations range from campgrounds and rustic cabins to 4-star resorts, with plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs to satisfy all.
