Sochi: 9 Jul 2008 to 11 Jul 2008
The snow-capped Caucasus Mountains create a dramatic backdrop for this inviting resort on the Russian Riviera. Palm-lined boulevards, lush parks, beachfront resort hotels, restorative mineral baths and spas are all part of Sochi’s allure. Joseph Stalin built his favourite dacha here, surrounding the compound (now a hotel) with trees imported from California to shield it from prying eyes. The city, expanded under Soviet rule, is something of a showcase for Russian architecture and art from the 1930s through the 1960s.
A drive of about 30 miles to the north of Sochi brings you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Western Caucasus. This diverse region remains virtually untouched by human intrusion. Within its protective borders stand trees believed to be the tallest in Europe. Ecosystems range from mountain forests to glaciers to alpine pastures. Watch for grazing herds of endangered Wisents (European Bison), reintroduced into the region several decades ago.
