The World

Trabzon: 6 Jul 2008 to 8 Jul 2008

Trabzon, the largest port on the Black Sea, has served for centuries as a centre of international trade. Founded by Greek traders from Miletus around 756BC would become an important part of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires as well as a link on the old Silk Road between Asia and the West.

Visitors to the region are drawn to several historic edifices, including the impressive Hagia Sophia Church (now a museum), Trabzon Castle and Atatürk House. The magnificent Sumela Monastery is found outside the city, in Altindere National Park. Clinging to the base of a sheer cliff, it was originally founded around 386AD by two Athenian priests. Over the centuries, it would eventually expand into the complex of living quarters, library, kitchen, aqueduct, church and guest quarters you see today. The tranquil setting within the park enhances the monastery’s almost magical aura.
