Lesvos: 27 Jun 2008 to 29 Jun 2008

Lovely green Lesvos, third largest of all the Greek isles, has a number of surprises in store: A replica of the Statue of Liberty greets those arriving by sea; botanists and bird watchers are drawn by the island’s diverse flora and fauna; therapeutic hot springs appeal to visitors seeking respite from various aches and ills; pleasing views, fine olive oil and strong ouzo entice just about everyone.

Also known as Mytilini, after the island’s capital city, Lesvos was home to famed 7th–century poetess Sappho, and birthplace of philosopher Theophrastus and Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseus Elytis. Be sure to visit the Archaeological Museums, as well as the small museum housing some of the works of local folk artist Hatzimichalis Theophilos. The mountain village of Ayiassos, famed for its pottery and balconied homes, along with picturesque Kalloni and Molyvo, on beautiful Kallanis Bay near the center of the island, are pleasing side trips.
