The World

Fethiye: 6 Jun 2008 to 9 Jun 2008

Set between a sparkling bay dotted with islands and a backdrop of verdant pine forests, Fethiye is a most pleasing sight from the sea. The famed Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz is a short drive away, while other (less crowded) beaches are also nearby. Excursions by boat to many of the small islets offshore are easily arranged—don’t forget your sunscreen!

Nearby is the ghost village of Kayaköy, abandoned in 1923 when all of its Anatolyan-Greek residents were relocated to Greece, leaving behind a handsome basilica and nearly two thousand now decaying cottages. The Saklikent Gorge, with its cascading ice water from winter snows in the mountains, is another popular spot for hiking and picnicking in the summer. Fethiye is also the starting point of the Lucian Way, a marked footpath over 300 miles long which winds through the rugged terrain to Antalya.
