The World

Salalah: 8 May 2008

Oman, second largest country in the Arabian Gulf, is mountain ranges, desert sands and green wadis (riverbeds). The landscape is dotted by a whopping 500 forts and castles. Miles of sandy ripples make up the Empty Quarter, impressive peaks the Hajar Mountains. Ancient fjords cut through Musandam and Dhofar breathes with lush hillsides and waterfalls.

Only Muslims can enter the ornate mosques and one should dress modestly when sightseeing. Look for special finds at a Souk in Salalah Town (about 16 km/10 mi from port) or take a stroll along the corniche. During Siesta (13:00-17:00 hrs/1-5 p.m.), sip a yoghurt drink flavoured with pistachio or cardamom and then decide whether to watch some bull butting, a camel or horse race, go dhow cruising or “wadi bashing”, or perhaps take in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, such as ancient Al Baleed or Ras al Hadd, home of the rare green turtle.
