Porbandar: 7 Apr 2008 to 8 Apr 2008

The Indian port of Porbandar on the Arabian Sea has been a thriving seaport at least since the early 1500s, during the Mughal Empire. The strategically placed port was for a time the headquarters of the powerful Jetwa Rajput dynasty, which ruled the region for some two thousand years.

Porbandar was known as Sudamapuri in ancient times, honouring Sudama, the devoted friend of Lord Krishna mentioned in Hindu scripture; a temple honouring Sudama is a popular destination for Hindi pilgrims. Nowadays, the city is perhaps most famous as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi; Kirti Mandir, built around his birthplace, is a memorial to the “Father of India.” Other interesting sites include the massive Huzoor Palace and Daria Rajmahal, both near the seafront. There are also two nearby wildlife sanctuaries, where pink flamingos are among the many attractions.
