Musandam: 24 Mar 2008 to 26 Mar 2008
The Governorate of Musandam, in the far north of the Sultanate, is a rugged, mountainous region, formed during the Cretaceous and Miocene ages, 1850 million years ago. The mountains originally constituted part of the Zagros Mountain range, but with earthquakes and volcanic activity, separated to form the Hajar Mountain range.
The World is scheduled to call on Khasab, which sits on a fjord-like recess in Oman’s Musandam Peninsula. Here, rocks rise vertically from the sea and the Portuguese chose this area to erect a fort in the early 17th century. Take advantage of abundant opportunities to snorkel and explore underwater life. Time permitting, strike out to explore any of the other three areas (called wilayats) that make up Musandam: Bhuka is home to the mountain-top fort of Al Qala’a; Dibba is characterized by vast fjords; and ancient rock-paintings dating back to pre-Islamic days can be found in Mudha.
