Victoria, Mahe: 6 Mar 2008 to 8 Mar 2008

Victoria is possibly the world’s smallest capital, situated on the largest of the Seychelles. Although quite modernised during the past 20 years, the courthouse and post office in the town centre are reminders of Mahé’s colonial days. The Trianon is a magnificently preserved Creole mansion-cum-restaurant and Little Ben—a facsimile of London’s Big Ben—adds charm. For insight into the islands’ history, which were settled in the 17th century and have no indigenous people, stop by the National History or Seychelles People’s United Party Museums.

For nature lovers, there are the shady walkways, orchids and giant tortoises of Victoria’s Botanical Gardens. Beau Vallon, Mahé’s largest and most popular beach, offers big waves, wind surfing and ocean platforms for swimmers, snorklers and divers.

Ste Anne Marine National Park, comprised of six nearby islands, beckons with buried treasures and ghosts, the House of Dogs, an idyllic island trail and plenty of snorkelling.
