Port Louis: 19 Feb 2008 to 23 Feb 2008

Named in honour of King Louis XV, Port Louis is Mauritius largest city and main port. Many of the city’s historic and colonial buildings have been preserved and La Citadelle or Fort Adelaide, built by the British in 1835, dominates the city and offers lovely views of Port Louis’ architecture. Also popular are the police barracks known as Les Casernes and the Port Louis Waterfront. The city surprises with its skyline, which includes the tallest building in Mauritius.

Offering something for all tastes, shoppers can wile away an afternoon at Port Louis Bazaar, the Caudan Waterfront or Mauritian Chinatown, while history buffs may want to explore the Mauritius Natural History or Blue Penny Museums. For nature lovers, there is the surrounding Moka Mountain Range to explore. Don’t forget to try some local cuisine at Kadafi Square or perhaps round out your day with a visit to the elaborate memorials at the Chinese burial grounds.
