Port Elizabeth: 5 Feb 2008 to 7 Feb 2008
Named after Elizabeth Donkin, wife of Governor Rufane Donkin, who founded the city in 1820, this major sea port is set along the beautiful shores of Algoa Bay and is also known as the Friendly Eco-City.
View Port Elizabeth’s central district and waterfront from Donkin Reserve, a hillside park complete with lighthouse and stone pyramid. Fort Frederick recalls the times when British troops protected themselves against the French, and the Horse Memorial was erected in honour of the many horses and mules which died during the Second Boer War. Scenic nature trails can be found in and around Port Elizabeth, and running right through well landscaped Settler’s Park in the city centre.
For a trip out of town, consider nearby Addo Elephant National Park, ranked among the country’s top twenty parks. In preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Port Elizabeth is busy creating a harbour area to rival Cape Town’s popular Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
