Depart the pier and begin the 45-minute drive to Jumeirah Beach, lined with glitzy high-rise resorts. Pause for photos near the striking, sail-like Burj Al Arab, the world’s tallest hotel. Drive on to Jumeirah Mosque, the city’s largest and a fine example of modern Islamic architecture.

From the mosque, drive about an hour through the Al Bastakiya district (old quarter of Dubai) where a stop will made at the Spice Souk. A myriad of aromatic spices, dried fruit and nuts from throughout the Middle East are on display, offered by proprietors eager to fill your seasoning needs. Finally make your way on foot to the nearby Gold Souk. All that glitters is gold here, in stall after stall filled with rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pins and pendants, where vendors offer goods of a pricier, more durable nature. Generally sold by weight, the vast selection of items range in design from classic to modern, delicate to bold, in a surprising range of colours.

After a bit of time for shopping or “just looking,” follow your guide to the car park and make the 15-minute return drive to The World.
