DOZZA AND EMILIA ROMAGNA DELIGHTS:
Code: RAV-03
Duration: 5 hours
Date: 31 Aug 2008
Time: Morning
Tiny Dozza, about 30 km (19 miles) from Bologna, provides a unique setting for sampling some of Emilia Romagna’s renowned food and wine.
The delightful hill town of Dozza is home to the Biennale del Muro Dipinto, or Biennial Painted Wall competition. Every other September, artists come from around the world to decorate Dozza’s walls with inventive murals and trompe l’oeil renderings, creating an endless feast for the eyes. Join your guide for a walk around the village, a Renaissance charmer even without its colourful frescoes.
Slowly make your way to Rocca Sforzesca, or Sforza Castle, the turreted bastion at the top of the town. Have a look at the castle’s 15th and 16th century furnishings and paintings, as well as its collection of armour and weaponry. Finally, head down to the cellars, where the Enoteca Regionale dell’Emilia Romagna is housed. Learn about (and sample) the region’s celebrated wines and delicious foods, including Parmigiano Reggiano, Culatello, Prosciuto di Parma and Piadina Romagnola (flat bread). Featured wines may include Lambrusco, 'Albana, Trebbiano, Sangiovese and other varieties not found outside the region.
