PRUNELLI GORGES:
Code: AJA-02
Duration: 3½-4 hours - See NOTE below
Date: 12 Oct 2008
Time: Morning
Take in the dramatic Corsican scenery on today’s drive through the Prunelli Gorges.
Depart the port and head towards Cauro and Bastelica, near the centre of the island. Very soon, the steep, winding road climbs into the mountainous interior, with the landscape changing rapidly from gardens and orchards to jagged granite and dense pine forest. After about an hour, pause for photos at the entrance to the spectacular Prunelli River Gorges. Drive on to Lake Tolla, a manmade reservoir created when the river was dammed in 1964. Stretch your legs and enjoy the crisp mountain air and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, more than 2000 metres/6562 feet high.
Continue your scenic drive through the gorges, pausing along the way for a rest and snack of traditional Corsican ham, sausage, cheese and wine. Your route back down to Ajaccio travels through numerous small villages, including Ocana and Bastelicaccia.
NOTE: Please check with onboard Tour Specialists; exact departure date and time depends upon timing of the Corsica Rally.
