Date: 10 Oct 2008

Time: Morning

Explore the sights of Ajaccio, capital of Corsica and birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, on this informative walking tour.

Famously described as “Un Homme petit par la taille, mais grand par l’esprit” (a short man with a large brain), the future Emperor of France was born here in Ajaccio in 1769. A descendant of Florentine immigrants who fled Italy in the 16th Century, Napoleon spent his early childhood here in Ajaccio. References to the French hero are everywhere, including a large statue in Foch Square. Have a look in the cathedral where he was christened in 1771 before continuing your walk to Maison Bonaparte, his birthplace. Now a museum, its collection features 18th century furniture, souvenirs, arms and documents that once belonged to the emperor.

Walk on through the city to Museé A Bandera, recognized by the colourful fresco on its façade depicting three of the island’s most celebrated inhabitants—Sampiero, Paoli and Bonaparte. The museum’s large collection of rare documents, weapons and costumes, ancient coins and models traces ten thousand years of Corsican history, from the pre-historic through the Second World War.

At the conclusion of your tour, you may remain in town on your own or return to the pier with your guide.

NOTE: Please check with onboard Tour Specialists; exact departure date and time depends upon timing of the Corsica Rally. Exact order of the sights visited may vary.
