Duration: 5 hours - See NOTE below

Date: 11 Oct 2008

Time: Morning

Explore the fascinating Neolithic site in Corsica’s Taravo Valley, administered by the CNRS, Centre National de la Rechehche Scientifique.

Journey about 90 minutes from the port along a winding roadway to the archaeological site, south of Propriano. Discovered by the landowner in 1948, the site features Corsica’s most important pre-historic relics. Set in a meadow surrounded by olive trees and patches of wild mint, the Filitosa excavations include sixteen magnificent sculpted menhirs (standing stones), numerous large fragments, three Torréean monuments and the remains of a small village. Some scientists speculate that the carved stones may have been memorials to chieftains and warriors, while others conjecture they are portraits of enemy Torréeans.

Explore the site on foot, traversing the uneven ground for about an hour with your knowledgeable guide. Afterwards, visit the small museum displaying pottery, weapons and other items discovered at the dig. Enjoy some free time before beginning the drive back to Ajaccio.

Your scenic route carries you up to St. George’s Pass, back down to sea level and along the Gulf of Valinco.

NOTE: Please check with onboard Tour Specialists; exact departure date and time depends upon timing of the Corsica Rally. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes; the terrain may be muddy and slippery due to recent rains.
