TREASURES OF LUCCA:
Code: POV-03
Duration: 7½ hours
Date: 30 Sep 2008
Time: Morning
Journey to Tuscany to explore Lucca, the once powerful city-state where an evening passeggiata (stroll) atop the old city walls is still a routine event.
Travel south along the coast nearly an hour before turning inland and driving another 32 km (20 miles) to Lucca. Still a prosperous city, Lucca owed most of its early wealth to a very successful silk trade dating to the 11th century and an equally lucrative banking industry. Its 16th century walls remain intact, encircling the entire medieval portion of the city.
Your knowledgeable guide will lead you on an informative walk of more than two hours, touching on many of the city’s historic churches and monuments. Lucca’s wealth of art and architecture is quite extraordinary, as you shall see. Visit the Cathedral of St. Martin and view the holy relic known as Volto Santo as well as Tintoretto’s Last Supper and other baroque treasures. Don’t miss the magnificent tomb of Ilaria Carretto Guinigi, sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia.
Your route will carry you to Lucca’s emblematic Torre Guinigi on the handsome palace built for Lucca’s ruling family. The brick tower reaches 44 metres (144 feet) and is crowned by seven Holm oaks—a climb to the top offers sweeping views in all directions. The outline of the 11th-century Roman amphitheatre, at Piazza dell’ Anfiteatro, is still recognizable.
Another two and a half hours are yours to explore this marvellous old city on your own. Perhaps have lunch at La Buca di Sant'Antonio, serving fine Lucchese cuisine since the 18th century. (Advance reservations advised.)
NOTE: Modest clothing is required to visit the churches—no shorts or bare shoulders, please.
