ANCIENT KROTON:
Code: CRO-01
Duration: 4 ¼ hours
Date: 06 Sep 2008
Time: Morning
The region around Crotone (known as Kroton when it was founded by the Achaeans ca. 710 BC) boasts a number of notable archaeological sites and museums. Today’s excursion focuses on Capo Colonna and Crotone itself.
Less than half an hour’s drive from the pier brings you to the eastern-most point of Calabria, site of the ancient Temple of Hera. Just one solitary Doric column rises above the cerulean sea where there once were 48 pillars supporting a massive structure. Spend over an hour exploring the site, now an archaeological park. Sacked repeatedly in later years, it may have met its final demise when a strong earthquake struck the region in the 3rd century AD.
Re-board your coach and drive back to Crotone for a look at the Norman castle built on an islet near shore. Walk from here to the local museum, where the exhibits include the crown found at the foot of Hera’s column. Enjoy some free time before returning to the pier, about a 15-minute drive away, or remain in town on your own.
