Duration: 9 hours

Date: 07 Sep 2008

Time: Morning

Discover Calabria’s Greek and Roman heritage on today’s journey to Scolacium, now Roccelletta di Borgia.

A pleasant drive of just over an hour through the Iconic Valley brings you to the village of Roccelletta, part of the municipality of Borgia. When the Romans conquered Magna Graecia, they often built their colonies atop the ruins of former Greek settlements—Scolacium is no exception. Follow your guide on a 90-minute walk through the recently discovered ruins, including the Roman theatre and Forum. The ruins are part of Scolacium Archaeological Park, situated in a large grove of olive trees. In addition to the ruins, a collection of modern sculptures of human forms (Time Horizon) are arranged around the grounds, some emerging from the earth, others standing atop pedestals.

Also visit the Archaeological Museum of Scolacium, in a villa complex expanded from the original 19th century structure. Two floors of spacious rooms display numerous cultural and artistic pieces discovered in the park. Walk with your guide around Squillace Superior, the upper portion of town. Afterwards, enjoy about 90 minutes of free time for lunch and independent exploration.

Meet at the designated time and place and re-board the coach for a one-hour drive to Le Castella, a 15th-century Aragonese castle built on a small islet in the Golfo di Squillace. Explore the restored fortress with your guide, followed by some free time before returning to The World in Crotone, about half an hour away.
