MARTINA FRANCA:

Code: TRT-04

Duration: 4 hours

Date: 05 Sep 2008

Time: Morning

Visit the medieval hillside town of Martina Franca on today’s foray into enchanting Valle d'Itria.

A scenic one-hour drive brings you into the heart of the Itria Valley, a lovely region of rolling hills and white-washed trulli houses. Martina Franca’s old city centre is a delight—narrow, medieval lanes, elegant baroque and rococo pallazi embellished with wrought iron balconies, imposing churches and inviting squares.

Enjoy a one-hour guided walk, visiting each of the town’s three main piazzas. Pass by the Palazzo Ducale on Piazza Roma; built in 1688, it now serves as City Hall. The nearby Dolphins Fountain is another highlight. Have a look inside the Collegiata di San Martino church, noted for its marble altars, carved pulpit and original Romanesque bell tower.

Before heading back to Taranto, enjoy an hour or so of free time to have a bite to eat or explore further.

NOTE: Modest dress is required to enter churches; no shorts or bare shoulders, please.
