THE TRULLI OF ALBEROBELLO:
Code: TRT-03
Duration: 6 hours
Date: 05 Sep 2008
Time: Morning
The small fairy-tale village of Alberobello is famous all over the world for its whitewashed, conical houses known as trulli. Today’s excursion includes a guided walk and some free time as well.
Head north across Italy’s heel about 90 minutes to the World Heritage Site of Alberobello, in Bari province. Begin your two-hour walk at Terrazzino Belvedere in Aia Piccola, one of two districts filled with examples of this unusual architecture. Follow your guide past some of the several hundred trulli to Casa D’Amore, the first house in Alberobello without the classical dome shape.
Continue on foot to the old city centre, Rione Monte, where we find another 1030 trulli, many of them private homes that have been restored and modernized inside. Visit the Church of St. Anthony, built in the traditional trullo shape. Rising nearly 20 metres (65 feet) at its peak, it dwarfs most of the surrounding structures. At the conclusion of your walk, enjoy an hour or so of free time before beginning the return drive to Taranto.
NOTE: Modest dress is required to enter churches; no shorts or bare shoulders, please.
