TARANTO, THE CITY OF TWO SEAS:

Code: TRT-01

Duration: 4 hours

Date: 03 Sep 2008

Time: Morning

Explore the “City of Two Seas” on today’s introductory tour of Taranto. Highlights include the National Archaeological Museum and the grand Aragonese Castel Sant’Angelo.

A ten-minute drive from the pier brings you to your first stop, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Cataldo. Originally built in the 11th century and largely rebuilt in the 18th century, it retains some of its Byzantine heritage. Be sure to have a look inside the lavishly decorated chapel, which features many fine frescoes.

Continue your exploration of the Old City (Citta Vecchia) as you drive on to the site of an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Poseidon. The two Doric columns are among the few large archaeological remains of this once-powerful Magna Graecia city. Afterwards, move on to the nearby Aragonese castle, built by King Ferdinand of Aragon in the late 15th century. Converted into a prison in the 1800s, it is now headquarters for the large naval contingent here.

Drive next to the acclaimed National Archaeological Museum, the oldest such museum in southern Italy. Spend nearly an hour exploring its large, high-quality collection of terra cotta figures, gold jewellery and ceramics. Afterwards, return to The World, just a short drive away.
