PIRAN ON FOOT:
Code: PRN-01
Duration: 3hrs
Date: 26 Aug 2008
Time: Morning
This delightful Venetian harbour town is perfect for a morning stroll.
Your guide will meet you at the pier and lead you to the heart of Piran, about a 15-minute walk. The compact town’s history dates back to the Greeks, deriving its name from pyr, the Greek word for fire; centuries ago, bonfires were lit at the tip of the peninsula to guide ships to the port of Koper.
Sometimes described as a diminutive Dubrovnik, Piran’s harbour and red tile roofs create an eye-pleasing panorama from the sea. A handsome 17th-century villa on the waterfront houses the Maritime Museum, with interesting exhibits about Piran’s history and the salt-making process so important to the region. Well-preserved portions of the town’s medieval wall still protect its eastern edge. Bilingual signs mark the narrow cobblestone lanes, for the Italian influence remains strong.
The town’s main square is named for composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini, born here in 1692. His monument dominates the square, while the handsome Cathedral of St. George serves as backdrop. Typical Venetian and Gothic houses line the town’s narrow, winding streets, many decorated with the traditional lion and book. Your guide will point out the town’s oldest house, a charming red Venetian-style palazzo on the square. St. George’s, one of Slovenia’s most popular wedding venues, features a bell tower that will be familiar to anyone who has seen St. Mark’s in Venice.
Enjoy some free time before returning to The World, or remain in town for further exploration on your own.
