AKHUN MOUNT & STALIN’S DACHA:

Code: SOC-01

Duration: 4.5hrs

Date: 09 Jul 2008

Time: Afternoon

Today’s excursion includes panoramic views, a look at Sochi’s first spa and a visit to Stalin’s favourite dacha.

Begin with a drive to Akhun Mount, the highest point 663 metres (2175 feet) in the city. The climb to the top of the limestone observation tower (187 steps) is rewarded with excellent views of the Caucasus, the sea and the city below. Afterwards, drive on about half an hour to Matsesta Mineral Spring, site of the first health spa in Sochi. Opened in 1902, the spa was the first in what would grow to be the area’s major industry—hotels and resorts built around the plentiful bubbling waters found here.

Not far from here is Zelenaya Rosha (Green Grove), Stalin’s favourite summer home or dacha. A five minute walk from the parking lot brings you to the peaceful compound, now a hotel, where the Soviet relaxed and entertained. Many of the rooms have been preserved as they were during Stalin’s time; a wax figure of Stalin completes the scene. At the conclusion of your tour, sample some Georgian wine and snacks in the lounge.

En route back to the pier, enjoy a 40-minute orientation drive through central Sochi.
