LINDOS TOWN:
Code: RHO-03
Duration: 4.5 HOURS
Date: 11 Jun 2008
Time: Morning
Visit the ancient Doric town of Lindos, one of Greece’s most picturesque archaeological sites.
Enjoy the pleasing countryside of Rhodes as you drive the 56 km/35 miles from the port in Mandraki to Lindos. Built on a rocky promontory on the island’s east coast, the ancient acropolis is a blend of Gothic, Byzantine and Middle Eastern architecture. Surrounded by the sea on one side and the glimmering white buildings of the new town below, the acropolis stands about 122 m/400 ft above sea level.
Access to the old town is limited to pedestrians, small local delivery vans and donkeys for hire. Begin your exploration with the climb up the hill. Watch for the relief carving of a Rhodean warship at the foot of the steps. Your route carries you up the Hellenistic staircase first trod upon more than 2200 years ago. The town is famous for its carved doorways, façades and arched windows.
The partially restored Temple of Athenia Lindia is no doubt familiar from travel posters and guidebooks. The walls and towers of the Castle of the Knights of St. John stand precariously at the cliff’s edge. A Hellenistic stoa with projecting wings and a Roman temple are among the other ruins found here. The apostle St. Paul is believed to have landed here; a tiny chapel in the small bay south of the acropolis is dedicated to him.
Return to the car park below the acropolis and retrace your route back to The World along the coastal route.
NOTE: Comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and a hat are advised.
