RHODES AND THE GRAND MASTERS PALACE:
Code: RHO-01
Duration: 3.5 HOURS
Date: 10 Jun 2008
Time: Morning
Today’s introduction to the city of Rhodes includes a panoramic drive and a nearly two-hour walking tour in Old Town.
Depart the pier in Mandraki, passing by the two famous bronze deer that stand watch over the harbour entrance. A drive of about half an hour brings you to Mount Smith, site of the ancient acropolis. All that remain today are a restored stadium and small theatre, set amid a grove of olive trees. The hilltop location provides excellent views of the city below.
Continue your exploration with an orientation drive of approximately 45 minutes, encompassing many of the city’s highlights. Leave the coach behind and enter the fascinating Old Town on foot, passing through one of the five remaining city gates. Stone-paved lanes lead past 15th-century houses and shops. Follow along the ancient Street of the Knights to the Palace of the Grand Masters, centrepiece of the old city. Watch for shields above many doorways, marking such Gothic standouts as the Inn of the Order of the Tongue of Italy and the Inn of France. Visit the Palace of the Grand Masters. Originally constructed at the end of the 14th century, the palace was largely destroyed by an ammunition explosion in 1856. Rebuilt by the Italians who occupied the island for many years up until the end of WWII, the palace is now a museum. Many of the palace floors are covered with intricate mosaics taken from the island of Kos.
Enjoy some free time to shop at the bazaar-like string of shops along Socrates Street before returning to your ship.
NOTE: Comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and a hat are advised.
