PANORAMIC RHODES AND MOUNT FILERIMOS:

Code: RHO-02

Duration: 3 HOURS

Date: 10 Jun 2008

Time: Morning

The beauty of Rhodes unfolds during this panoramic drive to Mount Filerimos for a visit to the monastery.

Depart the port via the scenic coastal road, passing luxurious hotels and beachside resorts along the way. Just half an hour’s drive brings you to the ancient Ialyssos district of Rhodes, first inhabited during the Minoan Period. The Dorians also occupied the area, as evidenced by the remains of their 3rd century BC temple to Athena and Zeus Polios.

The upper portion of Filerimos is a large plateau, offering sweeping vistas of the island and the sparkling sea beyond. Spend about an hour exploring the Byzantine Monastery, originally built by the Knights of St. John. Be sure to visit the underground chapel, decorated with frescoes of various knights and Jesus. Walk along the Calvary roadway, marked with scenes from Christ’s final days. A huge cross, visible all around the island, stands at the top.

Leave Filerimos behind and head inland, encountering wonderful scenery and quaint villages along the way. Pause for photos at the summit of Mount Smith before crossing through Old Town and New Rhodes en route back to the pier. (If you would like to remain in Old Town to do some exploring on your own, please alert your guide in advance.)

NOTE: Modest attire is required at the monastery; no shorts or bare shoulders, please.
