EXPLORING SIDE:
Code: ALY-03
Duration: 5.5 HOURS
Date: 03 Jun 2008
Time: Morning
Today’s drive to the seaside town of Side (pronounced see-day) combines a guided walk with free time to have lunch and explore independently.
Drive along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast just over an hour north to the appealing town of Side. The name means pomegranate, a fruit embossed on the town’s coins in ancient times. Located on a small peninsula, its harbour is protected by crescent-shaped sand spits on either side. Pirates laid claim to the port during the 2nd century BC, raiding cargo vessels up and down the coastline.
Today, Side is a very popular resort, with chic boutiques and bistros interspersed with ancient ruins. The city flourished during Roman times and most of its ruins date from this period. Begin your exploration at the old arched city gateway, passing a monument dedicated to Emperor Vespasian. Continue along Colonnade Street, past the large amphitheatre and down to the water’s edge. The five remaining columns of the temple dedicated to Apollo and Athena are still strikingly beautiful.
At midday, enjoy about an hour and a half of free time—have lunch at one of the inviting cafés along the waterfront, do some shopping or explore the small side streets. Meet at the appointed time and place, where a local tractor with trailer wait to carry you back uphill to the parking lot.
NOTE: No outside vehicles are allowed inside the town. Good walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat are advised.
