ANCIENT CITIES OF PERGE & ASPENDOS:

Code: ALY-01

Duration: 8 HOURS

Date: 05 Jun 2008

Time: Morning

This full day excursion includes visits to Aspendos and Perge, two of the region’s most fascinating ancient sites from what was then known as Pamphylia. Visit the magnificent theatre in Aspendos as well as the archaeological museum in Antalya.

Drive from the port directly to Aspendos, a bit more than an hour away. Visit one of the finest surviving examples of Roman theatre construction in the world. Designed by Roman architect Zeno during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, the theatre at Aspendos still hosts plays, concerts and other events today, including a popular film festival. The engraved names of some original theatre patrons are still legible in the upper rows of the cavea section. Spend about half an hour exploring the theatre, noted for its exceptional acoustics.

Continue your drive to the city of Perge, founded after the Trojan War by a group of settlers from Argos. Excavations of the site began in 1946, eventually revealing the city gates, several avenues, agora and baths, a theatre and one of the best-preserved stadiums in Turkey. Explore the site with your guide during a 45-minute walk.

Drive next to the Antalya Museum, about an hour away. This vast collection of archaeological treasures features over 5,000 items displayed in 14 halls and an open-air gallery; over a thousand more objects remain in storage. Following your tour of the museum, drive into the heart of Antalya where you may have lunch and explore on your own for approximately an hour and a half.

The drive back along the coast to Alanya is about two hours.

NOTE: Comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen are advised.
